There is nothing quite like the feel of real wood underfoot. It adds immediate warmth, character, and significant value to your property. Unlike other floor coverings that eventually need replacing, a well-fitted wood floor simply gets better with age.

At Eastern Flooring Specialists, we are passionate about timber. We don’t just “lay” wood floors; we engineer them to last. Whether you are restoring a Victorian townhouse in Newmarket or adding a contemporary oak floor to a new build in Burwell, we bring the craftsmanship required to handle this natural material correctly.

We offer a complete service: from sourcing the finest European Oaks to expert installation and even dust-free sanding and restoration of existing floors.

Solid vs. Engineered Wood: What is the Difference?

This is the most common question we get asked in Suffolk. Both look identical from the surface (because they are both real wood), but they behave very differently.

    1. Engineered Wood Flooring (The Modern Choice)

Engineered boards are constructed from layers of high-quality plywood or softwood with a thick “wear layer” of solid hardwood (e.g., Oak or Walnut) on top.

    • The Benefit: It is incredibly stable. The layered construction stops the wood from expanding and contracting with temperature changes.

    • Best For: Kitchens, conservatories, and homes with Underfloor Heating (UFH). It is the practical choice for modern living.

    2. Solid Wood Flooring (The Purist’s Choice)

Each plank is a single, solid piece of timber cut from the tree. It is the traditional floor.

    • The Benefit: It can be sanded down and refinished many times over 50+ years. It feels incredibly solid and sounds distinctively “heavy” when walked on.

    • Best For: Period properties, living rooms, and areas with stable temperatures. Note: Solid wood is generally NOT suitable for underfloor heating.

Why Wood Flooring Requires Specialist Fitting

    1. Mandatory Acclimatisation

We will never just turn up and lay the wood on the same day. The timber must sit in your home for 48–72 hours (sometimes longer for solid wood) to adjust to the humidity of your specific room. This critical step prevents gaps from opening up later.

    2. Moisture Testing

We use industrial hygrometers to test your subfloor. If you are laying wood over a new concrete screed in a renovation, it must be dry. If the moisture levels are too high, we will install a Liquid Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) to block moisture from ruining the timber from below.

    3. Expansion Gaps

Wood expands in the summer and shrinks in the winter. We leave precise expansion gaps hidden under skirting boards or architraves. Without these, your beautiful new floor could buckle upwards in a heatwave.

    Our Installation Methods

We adapt our fitting method to your specific property and subfloor.

    The “Glue-Down” Method (Recommended)

For the most premium feel, we bond the timber directly to the subfloor using flexible, high-strength adhesive.

    • Why we love it: There is no “bounce” or hollow sound when you walk. The floor feels rock-solid, like a permanent part of the building structure.

    Secret Nailing

For traditional solid wood fitted over joists or a wooden subfloor, we use a port-nailer to drive nails through the tongue of the plank at a 45-degree angle. The nails are completely hidden, securing the floor firmly without visible fixings.

    Floating Installation

For engineered wood, we can “float” the floor over a high-performance underlay. This is often faster and provides excellent sound insulation for upstairs apartments.

    Styles & Finishes

We supply a vast range of timber grades and finishes to suit your interior design.

    • Prime Grade Oak: Clean, uniform colour with very few knots. Perfect for modern, minimalist aesthetics.

    • Rustic Grade Oak: Full of character, knots, and colour variation. Ideal for cottages and farmhouse kitchens.

    • Herringbone & Chevron: The classic parquet patterns that have made a huge comeback. We are experts in the complex “set-out” required to make these patterns flow perfectly through doorways.

    • Finishes: Choose from Oiled (natural, matte look that is easy to repair) or Lacquered (hard-wearing, satin sheen that requires zero maintenance).

    Floor Sanding & Restoration

Do you already have a wood floor hidden under an old carpet? Or perhaps your existing pine floorboards look tired and orange? Eastern Flooring Specialists offers a professional restoration service.

    • Dust-Free Sanding: We use industrial extraction units to sand your floors without covering your house in dust.

    • Staining & Sealing: We can change the colour of your floor—turning yellow pine into a chic “Grey Oak” or “Antique Walnut” shade before sealing it with high-traffic varnish.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I put wood flooring in a kitchen?

Yes, but we strongly recommend Engineered Wood with a lacquered finish. Engineered boards resist the humidity changes of a kitchen, and lacquer stops water splashes from staining the grain. Wipe up spills quickly, and it will last for years.

Will my dog scratch the floor?

Real wood can scratch, yes. It adds to the character (“patina”) over time. However, an oiled finish is great for pet owners because if a scratch appears, you can rub a little maintenance oil into that specific spot to hide it—you don’t need to sand the whole floor.

Is wood flooring suitable for Underfloor Heating (UFH)?

Engineered Wood: Yes, it is perfect for UFH. Solid Wood: No, we do not recommend it as the direct heat can cause the planks to dry out and shrink.

How do I clean my wood floor?

Less is more. A soft broom or vacuum (brush setting down) and a very well-wrung damp mop. Never soak a wood floor. We supply specialist cleaning kits that nourish the wood while cleaning it.
